Also, an interesting observation:

I send this weekly newsletter to my whole list which includes everyone who’s signed up for my free 10 day bootcamp. Every week there are some people who are away and have autoresponders, so I get things like,

“Hi! I’m at the national pole vaulting competition this week, but I’ll be sure to get back to you next week.”

I could write a whole newsletter on how weird it is to treat your e-mail like an answering machine, but I’ll keep that to myself.

What IS interesting, however, is that this week all of the autoresponders were from GIRLS. Apparently we’re being spied on, gentlemen.

That’s actually fine with me, though. I’ve told hundreds of girls about pickup, my involvement in it, and my wholehearted support of it. I haven’t ever had a bad reaction.

It all has to with how YOU feel about it, not how SHE feels about it. More about that in my book, or maybe I’ll address it in a future article.

Also, two guys wrote me back and asked for dates, so maybe girls aren’t the ONLY ones spying on us.

Hey Tynan,

My friend and I were discussing the fact that we don’t need to pay for things when out with chicks. It’s a great rule in the game, and we’re all for it. But what to do when the waiter comes and she says nothing?

If the waiter just sets it on the table, and you’re not intending to pay for the girl, but she says nothing, or even that she DOES say something like, “aren’t you going to pay for me?”, how do you usually handle it.

At the moment, my buddy’s technique if she expects him to pay he will, but fly off after and not pursue her anymore. Surely here’s a better, and easier, way to neg the girl for being like this?

Any pointers on this would be great, because although it’s easy to say you won’t pay for girls, it gets harder when the situation arises and she expects it.

D, I could kiss you right now. This is a great question.

I’m psyched to answer it because it’s something I’m VERY passionate about, so this will be a long one.

Other than the right to eat bacon cheeseburgers, I’m all for women having equal rights. Want to go to the same schools as men? Great! Want to be in the army? Really? Awesome. Want to get equal jobs and equal pay? Perfect.

In fact, I’d like to treat women equally in every way.

And guess what… that includes paying for themselves.

We used to have to pay for women because they couldn’t or weren’t expected to work. Fair enough. They invest their time around the house and we invest our time earning money. It worked out.

But… now that they earn as much as we do (not in all cases, but it’s in the same ballpark), we’re still supposed to pay?

I don’t think so.

That’s like George Bush leaving office next year and saying “Well, I WAS president, so I think I should still be able to make up some laws.”

Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear him say that. Moving on…

So what is the purpose of paying for girls if it’s not to provide what they can’t provide for themselves?

It’s to buy her time. Period.

A while back I put a personals ad up for one of my girl friends. She was a very attractive cool girl who wasn’t very good at meeting guys. Here’s what one of them said in their e-mail:

“I’ll take her to any restaurant she likes, so that even if she doesn’t like me she’ll still get a good meal out of it.”

WHAT?

Does that sound TOTALLY NUTS to anyone else?

Even if it isn’t always articulated so overtly, that’s what every guy is communicating when he pays for a girl.

It’s a bribe to get your chance at attracting her.

I think very highly of myself. If I’m out with a girl, I think highly of her too. We’re on the same level – we don’t need to bribe each other for our time.

The chance to get to know another awesome person is more than enough reward, and is certainly more valuable than a $12.95 steak fajita from Klimpy’s.

But… your question wasn’t “do you have any longwinded on rants on paying for girls?” You want to know what to actually do when that check comes.

First, sit for a second. Don’t rush to get the bill. When you’re with your guy friends do you race and pick up the bill, or do you continue the conversation and pay when you’re ready to go?

Half the time she’ll grab it and pay it.

You should be knocking these dates out of the park so that 99% of her attention is occupied with how awesome you are, and the last 1% is thinking about the bill.

If you did a bad job, 100% of the focus is on the bill.

“I’d better at least get a butter chicken out of this, because D is really lame.”

If she pays, let her. Don’t play that stupid “no, please! It’s on me!” game. If she offers to pay, just say “Cool. I’ll get the next one.”

Of course, thank her for the meal as you leave the restaurant. That’s just good manners.

Pay next time, and alternate every time you go out. That’s an ideal situation.

If she doesn’t offer to pay, pick up the bill, put your portion on the leather folder thing and hand it to her. Don’t make a big deal out of it, just act as if she was one of your friends.

I have NEVER had a girl who didn’t just pay the bill without saying a word. I have lots of girl friends who say things like “What? If a guy didn’t pay for me I would never see him again.”

Yeah, that’s for average guys who have nothing to offer but an occasional deep fried awesome blossom. When you’re an ATTRACTIVE guy, girls will not follow any stupid rules like that.

When you have a girlfriend you can loosen up the rules a BIT, but not by much. I haven’t paid for a girlfriend in many years. When Katya wanted money I gave her a job at my business and she worked 30-40 hours a week.

I did pay for her plane ticket to visit my family in Boston, though.

If you make a LOT more money than the girl, then you can pay sometimes. For example, if I have a girlfriend who’s a student and we’re going on a trip together, I might pay for the hotel by myself. I’d have to pay for it anyway, so it’s no big deal. She can pay for her plane ticket and food and stuff.

Maybe I’ll pay for more expensive dinners and let her pay for lunches. It’s not about accounting for every last penny, but rather a mutual respect of each other and each other’s resources.

One LAST thought on this. Your buddy’s idea is terrible. He’s not confident enough to stand up for what he believes, and he ends up punishing the girl even though she didn’t really do anything wrong. If she does ask about it, tell her how you feel! Any opportunity to express yourself is an opportunity to attract her.

There was one girl who called me and said “Hey, I haven’t seen you in forever. Will you buy me dinner?”

I laughed and basically told her everything I’ve written here so far.

“Well, that seems weird to me. Come have dinner with me and I’ll pay.”

I’m a 21 year old guy in the Navy and I’m around females 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I have a lot of friends and almost all of them are females. Yet, when I get interested in a girl, I tend to push them away somehow. I’m not quiet, shy, or nervous and everybody tells me that I’m not half bad to look at either, so that’s not the problem. All of my friends tell me that I give my heart out to a girl to quickly and then it gets trampled on. I tend to fall for a girl really easily and then I say the “L” word too soon. I’m tired of pushing a girl away with too much love. I just want to be with a chick (or chicks) without all the hassle. What do I do to fix myself to make a girl actually want to date me?

First off, I’d like to compliment you on two things:

1. Fantastic initial. Studies show that people with a T for a first initial are better in every way than people with other initials.

2. Your e-mail was the best written one this week. There was another one I wanted to answer, but it had so many things like “ru shure?” that I couldn’t bear to use it.

I’ve got a couple friends in the Navy, and the one thing they constantly complain about is that there are NO women where they are. What sort of special detail are you on?

Seriously, though, your problem is a SERIOUS one and a COMMON one. It’s also VERY close to my heart.

I once wrote a SONG for a girl who I hadn’t talked to in two years and mailed it to her because I thought I was in love with her.

CREEEPY?

Yep. Thank god for the game!

So, believe me… unless you’re shipping off a few CDs a week, you’re probably in better shape than I was. And if I can stop that crap, then so can you.

I know you’ve heard this stuff a million times, but girls are DYING for a guy that they can chase. I don’t advocate making them chase you because I think it’s fun (although it is)… I do it because it WORKS BETTER.

Here’s an ideal situation for a girl:

1. She meets a guy who is CONFIDENT and DIFFERENT and HARD TO READ. He asks for her number but she’s not quite sure he’s going to call.

2. She gets the drama and emotional roller coaster of wondering whether or not he’s going to call. She talks to her girlfriends about him and builds him up in her head.

3. He calls and invites her to hang out. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Does he like me?

4. She goes to meet up with him, he is super interesting, confident, and fun. She starts to feel like she’s winning him over, and eventually they hook up.

Think about how that would FEEL for a girl. It would be fun. It would be an adventure.

Now consider how it normally works:

1. She meets a guy and gives him her number. SHE’S not sure how she feels about him.

2. He calls and asks her on a date. She feels no excitement, but decides to give him a chance.

3. He brings flowers, instantly making her feel awkward, and brings her to an expensive restaurant. They interview each other for an hour, and then he pays.

4. He walks her to her door and goes for the goodnight kiss that she was expecting all night. Whether she concedes or not is irrelevant.

How does she feel this time? Bored. She knows what’s coming and didn’t get any sort of challenge.

Now, I’m not saying that’s exactly your MO, but I bet that your MO gives her the same (nonexistant) emotions.

So, from a point of view of what SHE wants, it’s NOT for you to come on strong. I think that’s a common misconception in the pickup community. We’re not WITHHOLDING what she wants, we’re GIVING IT to her.

SECOND…

This may seem counterintuitive, but you’re NOT being authentic when you come on strong in the beginning.

Do you REALLY love her?

CAN you really love her before you know her?

NOPE. You can be attracted, but you aren’t in love with her. Acting like you love her is actually just neediness manifesting itself.

It’s subcommunicating, “I’m needy and I REALLY want to be in love with you.”

She may very well fall in love with you later, but if she sees you falling in love too early, she’ll stomp on the breaks.

Ok, so let’s talk about a few practical things you can do to work on this problem.

1. NO paying for anything (gifts, dates, etc.)

2. NO compliments.

3. NO asking what she wants to do (be the decision maker, don’t force her to be).

4. NO saying “I love you” until she does.

And this last one goes for EVERYONE:

5. NEVER ask about the relationship. EVER. “Where is this going?” “Do you like me?” “Do you want to be my girlfriend?” “Did you have fun?” “Do you want to see me again?”

These are all terrible questions that show massive insecurity and neediness.

I’m not saying to NEVER do 1-4, but I’m saying as an exercise to try avoiding them for a couple months. See where that leaves you and then maybe add in a little bit of complimenting (but I’d still leave the others out).

Best of luck, and if you ever run into my Navy friends, show them where the girls are!

A little aside before I get started. Today I was hanging out with a couple here in Panama. We were talking about traveling, learning languages, eating food, and all that sort of stuff, when all of a sudden the guy in the couple brought up the game.

They had some friends that were into it.

“I’m into that stuff too,” I said.

They mentioned the book and I told them I’m one of the characters. The girl’s eyes lit up.

“TELL ME ABOUT IT!”

I looked at her and I realized it was a VERY familiar look.

Why?

Because that’s the look girls ALWAYS give me when they hear that I know about game. And this isn’t just because I’m a “Q-List Celebrity” from The Game. I used to just be a dude trying to learn about girls and it got the same reaction.

Girls LOVE this stuff. What do girls care about more than anything? Being social. If you KNOW stuff about that, they LOVE hearing about it.

So, look… I used to be SUPER embarrassed about pickup. I bought a crappy paperback “manual” about it and I literally hid it in my safe. My best friend and I both randomly showed up at a lair meeting once in Austin, having no idea that the other was into pickup.

We were both too embarrassed to tell the other one about it.

Anyway, my point is this – learning about pickup is AWESOME. Girls respect it IF you respect it. If you’re embarrassed about it, they will think you’re lame. Try telling ONE girl this week that you’re learning pickup. My guess is that she’ll be intrigued and probably try to help you.

Ok, moving on to today’s letter.

Hey D,

It’s going great. I was actually just talking about this subject the other day with my friend who’s traveling the world with me. We’ve been making videos about our travels and he thinks he sounds funny on them. In fact, if you watch our latest video at www.lifenomadic.com you’ll hear him making fun of himself at the end of the tape.

Here’s the thing: NO ONE likes the sound of their voice on tape – AT FIRST. When we hear our voice in our head while we’re talking, it vibrates through our bones and makes it sound lower.

So every single guy on this planet’s voice sounds less “manly” when recorded than it does when they talk.

I used to hate my voice too, but then I started rapping. At first I would actually blush when I listened to my own songs because I thought my voice was so terrible. Yeah, I would blush even if NO ONE ELSE was around. So I know what you’re talking about.

Then I just listened to my voice a lot and finally got over it. Now I think I have a fantastic voice – which may or may not be true. I’m going to send you a copy of Make Her Chase You, which includes a one hour recording of me picking up some girls, so you’ll get to hear what I sound like.

So, my first bit of advice to you is to record your voice every single day for 15 minutes and listen to it. This will take 30 minutes out of your day, but you can do it in the car or while you’re doing something else. Eventually you will probably like your voice.

Next, your voice WILL ALWAYS reflect YOU. Everything you do reflects YOU. So the real question is… how do you solve the PROBLEM instead of the SYMPTOM?

You stop being needy and you stop being a nice guy. That’s the only way. How do you do that? Learn the right techniques and then get out there and get experience talking to girls.

I focus a lot on becoming confident and positive in my book, so I think that’s going to help you.

I had no idea that picking a question was going to be this difficult. In spite of my e-mail address bouncing mail for a few hours, I got TONS of really great questions. In fact, it was pretty hard to pick just one to answer.

I picked this one, though, because it illustrates a few basic points that I think a lot of people don’t get. It’s from Paul from Boston, MA (my hometown!).

The Question

Dear Herbal,

Most of my time is spent doing school work but this has led to my being accepted to the best schools in my field for graduate study. Most of the girls on my campus date the meat-head type of guys or the rebels – both of which spend their time in less than academic pursuits.

A few months ago I started to date this girl who I thought was stunningly attractive, intellectual, and an overall great fit for my personality. In late December she broke up with me because I just “did not do it for her anymore.” It really stung and I am still getting over it. I’m having a hard time because it was the first scenario in my life where a girl who I liked actually liked me back.

It feels like I won’t be able to keep a woman even though she said that I satisfied her sexually and intellectually. I am just starting out playing “The Game” and am wondering if I am getting into it for the wrong reasons. Also, how do you approach the girl who broke up with you and not feel inadequate? Lastly, wouldn’t the S-and-R value of non-academic jocks/meat-heads be lower than mine in the long-run since they won’t get into good graduate schools or have good careers?

Hey Paul,

Let’s imagine that we have two girls.

Girl A is beautiful, fun, and a great conversationalist. She wears great designer clothes and always looks well put together.

Girl B isn’t ugly, but she doesn’t spend much time on her appearance. Her complexion isn’t great, her hair is frazzled, and it looks like her skin hasn’t seen the sun in weeks. She’s very smart, but not particularly fun to talk to. Her wardrobe hasn’t changed in five years, and it shows.

Who do you want to date?

Yeah, me too.

It’s not that Girl B would be TERRIBLE, but Girl A is a lot more appealing.

What if I told you that Girl B was in the process of becoming a rocket scientist? That might HELP, but if you actually had the choice, I think you’d still pick Girl A. Which brings me to my point:

We know what girls are attracted to. Rather than fight it, let’s embrace it.

Some people (and I’m not saying this is you) whine all day about how the other guys get the girl and how it’s not fair and how they SHOULD like you.

But they shouldn’t. Girls are a GREAT feedback tool. If they don’t like you, you’re doing something wrong. There’s no way around it. It’s your burden to prove that you’re worth getting to know, not hers to dig the best out of you.

Now, to get back to you specifically, Paul. Unlike my example, girls don’t care very much about looks. They care about personality and how you make her feel. And here’s my guess: You’re not very exciting.

I don’t mean this as an insult. I know you have a lot going for you, and I definitely believe that you want a high quality girl and would treat her very well. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be answering your question. Most importantly, I KNOW that you can become attractive to girls.

But here’s the thing: when girls go to the amusement park of life, they want to ride a roller coaster, not a merry go round. The rebels and jocks are exciting and maybe even a little bit dangerous. They’re roller coasters.

It’s not that girls don’t want driven guys with high goals. They definitely do! But… they want the whole package, and personality comes first.

The upside of this is that once you BECOME the whole package, you’ll be a step above the guys who are not (and MOST guys are NOT).

Your challenge is going to be this: You’re going to need time to improve at the game. I can cut down the time you need to get it by guiding you in the right direction and giving you good advice, but it still takes time to improve.

Now MAY not be a time in your life when you’re ready and willing to commit the time to improving with women. I can’t fault you for that, either. I’ve had periods of time where I don’t give girls a second thought and I’m focused on my business.

It will take you a minimum of 8 hours a week to get better. I’d suggest you see what you can cut out of your schedule to make room. Do you watch TV or movies? Cut them out. Do you play video games or read stupid sites like Digg? Cut those out too.

If you’re NOT motivated enough to carve eight hours a week out from your schedule, then you probably won’t have the drive to get much better with women either.

But… if you CAN make the commitment to get better, I have no doubt you’ll be able to do it. You clearly have drive, and you’ve had a high quality girlfriend before.

And to quickly answer your question about how you can face your ex:

Do it proudly. Her rejection doesn’t change who you are. Take this as an opportunity to work on building validation from the within. Maybe this is the best thing that could ever happen to you (I had some “tough love” like that in my life too, which prompted me to get into pickup). Maybe you’ll now be dedicated to becoming such an attractive guy that you’ll be meeting girls way better than her.

They’re definitely out there… it’s just a matter of whether or not you’re going to step up and do what it takes to get them.

I got started in pickup out of necessity.

She was going to school in Chicago and I lived in Austin. She admitted that she liked me before she left and kissed me. I thought I was in love, so I resolved to wait for her to get back to Austin.

We were meant for each other, right?

Wrong. After three years of never talking and her getting serious with her new Chicago boyfriend, I heard through a mutual friend that she was planning on going to grad school there after college.

Finally it hit me how stupid it was to wait for a girl who barely remembered that I existed. Being a huge nerd, I did the only thing I
could think of doing – I searched Google.

“Pick up girls”

I was fortunate enough to land on fastseduction.com where I began to absorb every last bit of information that I could find.

I knew that IF this stuff was real then I’d have to fully dedicate myself to it. I’d take off as much time as necessary, doing nothing but pickup, until I was good.

So I bought a plane ticket to a sold out DYD conference in Chicago that I didn’t have a ticket to. Embarrassed about my new hobby, I lied to everyone and told them I was visiting a friend there. The truth was that I didn’t know a single person there – I was just hoping I could run into them in the lobby and see a glimpse of this amazing skill called “pickup”.

I got lucky. I made friends with one of the guys from RSD, and as the rest of the crew joined one by one, no one questioned me being part of the group. By the end of the first night, I was sitting in on a RSD workshop for free.

And I was blown away. I saw Tyler pick up Miss Indiana right in front of her boyfriend. As soon as I saw that, I knew what my life was going to look like for the next few years.

Three weeks later I had my important belongings packed into my car, and left my less important belongings in my house which I was abandoning. I was headed to LA to live in Project Hollywood with the best pickup artists in the world, most of whom I’d never met.

They all took me under their wings. For several months I became friends with and learned from the legends of the game : Mystery, Style, Tyler, Papa, Ross, Twentysix, and Sickboy.

When RSD and Mystery split I had become good enough to teach with Mystery. We toured the country teaching hundreds of guys in workshops all across the US.

Eventually we had our falling out that was chronicled in The Game and I headed back to Austin.

Life was good. Getting girlfriends was easy, and our relationships were rock solid. Strangely, all of the girls I knew in LA kept calling me, even years after I had left.

That’s when I realized something. Most of my game was learned from the guys in Hollywood, but there was one thing I figured out for myself that I could do better than them – I could keep girls’ interest indefinitely and they would LOVE me. When we broke up they’d invariably try to get back together with me, sometimes for years after.

It dawned on me that this wasn’t just because of things I did AFTER we got together, but rather that elements of my pickup style from the very beginning were causing girls to become attached to me from day one.

So I wrote a book about everything I’d learned and everything I’d discovered. More than just a pickup manual, it was the bible of how I live a life that’s happy, genuine, honest, and of course… full of girls. The book is called “Make Her Chase You“, because my style results in girls chasing and pursuing you, rather than the other way around.

Before I got into pickup I used to read a column called Doc Love. Every week he’d answer someone’s question about a problem they were having.

It was fascinating stuff and I waited to read it every week. Later, when I learned how to ACTUALLY meet women, I discovered that his advice wasn’t all that great.

Starting next week I’ll take questions from you guys.
