Anyone who has read me knows that there is something I say over and over again (because it is so important!): To be able to truly love yourself and to truly be able to love someone else, you must drop the ego. This is absolutely essential to finding an amazing relationship, but it’s equally critical to maintaining and continually improving a relationship once you’re already in it.

Nothing will kill a relationship (even the best of relationships) more quickly than ego. Here are 6 ways your ego can kill your relationship, and how to avoid having your ego ruin your relationship.

1.Resist The Temptation To Defend Yourself: Think about the number of times you’ve fought with a significant other, and whenever things get a little heated you start to defend yourself. All you hear is you being attacked, and you immediately go into “defending yourself” mode. Do you know that when you defend yourself in a fight, what’s really happening is your ego is defending itself.

It also means that you’ve stopped listening to the other person. If someone tells you that they don’t like the way you’ve been acting lately, why not hear them out instead of defending yourself? It will almost always create a MUCH better outcome.

2.To Love Yourself And Someone Else Completely You Must Separate The Ego: In order to truly love someone, you must separate your ego from yourself. This is also true if you want to be able to totally love yourself. Now, I know that in a perfect world, we would never be ego-driven. This is not a perfect world of course, so let’s get real. We are all ego-driven to some extent or another, so let’s acknowledge it and embrace that we need to separate the ego to cultivate and maintain a truly amazing relationship with someone.

3.Your Ego Can Ruin Any Conversation: The truth is that no matter how much you prepare, plan and hope for a good conversation with your significant other, your ego is the one thing that will consistently ruin any conversation you’re about to have if you let it.

Let’s say your significant other is frustrated with you in one way or another and really needs to express something about that to you. How do you respond? If you let your ego get involved and you defend yourself, it means that you’re not listening to them.

In order to really listen to somebody, it’s uncomfortable. Sometimes your significant other has things that are really bothering them about which they want to talk to you, but which you would rather not hear. To maintain a great relationship, however, you can’t let your ego keep you from really listening.

4.You Have To Be Willing To Drop The Ego And Learn To Have A Healthy Relationship: If you want to really be able to get deep with someone and take your relationship to a deep level, then you need to be able to take your ego out of the equation. You will always attract somebody who is just like yourself, because you really attract who you are as a person. Also, your significant other is going to do things that you don’t recognize. It may be voices, patterns, communication styles or other things with which you aren’t familiar.

You need to be open and able to learn these things about your significant other, and your ego will keep you from doing this every time. All of us need to learn things about our significant other every single day. We need to learn our significant other’s communication style, because many times your communication styles will be very different.

5.Dropping The Ego Doesn’t Mean You Need To Change Who You Are: It can take a lot for you to drop the ego, really listen to your significant other and realize that they need you say something in a different way or understand how the way you communicate may make them feel a certain way. A lot of people misunderstand these kind of requests as being their significant other’s attempt to change them. It’s not.

They’re not trying to change you, they are trying to improve the way you communicate with each other. They are trying to get the two of you to be able to communicate better than you ever have in the past. Don’t let your ego get in the way. Embrace this!

6. Ego Causes Those “Low Blowers” Which Are The Biggest Relationship Killers: Do you get frustrated when you’re having an argument with a significant other? Of course, we all do. When that happens, though, sometimes the ego will cause you to hurl what I call “low blowers” at the other person.

You’re feeling hurt, so you lash out and say something you know will make the other person hurt too. It was not only hurtful, but inevitably something stupid. By listening to your significant other, instead of lashing out from your ego, you can get through an argument without these low blows and they will be much more constructive (and not destructive to your relationship).

So the next time you see your ego getting involved in your relationship, get rid of it! If you find yourself defending yourself or not allowing you to really listen, then you need to take a step back. Listen carefully to what’s really being said, and use it to create the most amazing relationship.

Now don’t read this and think I’m some sour, crusty old man who is a Grinch and who steals people’s pumpkins at Halloween. I need to let you know, however, that in terms of a social opportunity I think holidays are for amateurs.

Everybody gears up for three days out of the year: Halloween, New Year’s Eve and The 4th of July. The drunken women who are counting down “5 … 4 … 3 … 2 … 1 …” are the same drunken women who are going “Woo Hoo!” when the fireworks go off on The 4th of July, and they are the same drunken women who dress up in the hooker outfits for Halloween to tease all the men (and who you will see throwing up in the corner into a big plastic pumpkin!)

Holidays are a blast . . . hanging out with friends, barbecuing, sucking down a few beers, getting corn stuck in your teeth, and eating some low-quality hamburger meat. But searching for and thinking that a magical party on The 4th of July is going to yield you the social results that have evaded you the rest of the year is a crock of shit! The 4th of July is just one day. The expectations on holidays never equal the results.

In order to create real fireworks in your life, you need to be working on your flirting skills every day. Even if you are at the coolest party on The 4th of July, you’re still bringing your lack of social skills with you. There’s no magic . . . in order to meet the opposite sex, you have to work on those skills every single day.

Have a great and rewarding 4th of July! You need to realize that you better start learning how to flirt and how to meet people every single day. Otherwise, come Halloween you’re going to be the one puking in the plastic pumpkin.

During our conversation, we got into the topic of expectations.

So many people have expectations about their life. They think, “If I take this job, my life is going to be so much easier” or “If I learn how to talk to women, my life is going to be so much better.”

What having expectations really means is that you’re not living in the present, because life is never what you think it’s going to be. Life is never exactly what your expectations envision.

Ask yourself these questions: Is your life exactly what you thought it was going to be? Did your career go exactly according to plan? Did your marriage go exactly according to plan? Are you making the exact amount of money you thought you’d make? Are you living in the exact type of home you thought you’d buy?

Every time we take on a new task, we take on expectations. I’ve heard guys say things like “I’m going to learn to meet women, and then meet ten women every day.” Anytime you have expectations, though, you are going to be let down. Having expectations means you are not living in the present and in the moment.

The only way to live is in the present . . . every minute and every second of every day. If you’re living in the present, life is going to come to you. When you have expectations, you are not living in the present.

The less you expect from life, the more you will receive in life. The only way to live is in the present.

If you get a new job, just go in there and kick ass every second of every day. If you want to meet women, go out there and enjoy every moment of every day.

When you have expectations, what happens is that you are putting pressure on yourself. You will not be able to concentrate on what’s happening in the moment because you are going to be comparing the actual moment with how you expected the moment to be. The problem is that expectations are almost always far greater (or at the very least different) than what’s really happening.

I know so many guys who allow their expectations to distort their perception of their day. They’ll think, “Wow, I only talked to three women today and I wanted to talk to ten.” So they are looking at their day as a failure instead of embracing what a great day it was. They look at their day as a failure because it didn’t match their expectations.

Not only can expectations negatively affect and distort how you view what’s happening around you, but they can also affect how people interact with you. When you have expectations (and thus are not present), people around you will see that you’re not present and will respond to you in a much different way than if you were completely present and in the moment when you were around them.

When you are not present, you are manifesting your own results. You will project a closed energy and not be attracting people to you like you otherwise would. You will end up missing the true energy of life.

Think about how you have seen this happen in your own life. How many times have you gotten really excited about a certain party? You have all these expectations about what the party will be like, who will be there, and what kind of experience the party will be for you.

More often than not, you don’t really have a great time at these events because of all the expectations you had. Think if you had just gone to that same party with no expectations and planned to just enjoy yourself. Think how many of those nights might have turned out differently.

How about on dates? Do you think that expectations might have played a role in the outcome of some of your dates? Think how many times you went out on your dates with high expectations, only to realize that you don’t even really like the person.

So take a look at your life and take a look at your expectations, and tell me if they’ve ever matched. The amazing thing about life is all the great little surprises that happen when you’re present in the moment.

This is something that really sunk in with me the other day during a conversation with my girlfriend. I really became conscious of the important difference between speaking from your head and speaking from your heart.

I was really irritated about something — I don’t know if it was something having to do with her or something else, but I was frustrated. As I was talking to her, she says to me “You’re so in your head. Speak from your heart.” So I took a deep breath and thought about it, and I realized that I was speaking from frustration (and from my head).

Speaking from the head (as opposed to from the heart) is something that men in particular tend to do when talking to women. We want to go and meet women, and yet we’re not speaking their language.

Women understand and are usually all about speaking from their heart and soul. Men, on the other hand, will talk to women and stay in their head the entire time.
All they are doing the entire time is thinking about what to say next and what to do.

When men do this, women know it. It shows. They will say “hello” in a nervous tone of voice, or say some line in a completely dispassionate way (all because they read somewhere that it was something they should say). They speak with absolutely no passion.

Have you ever had an argument with a woman where they start telling you all sorts of things that start with the words “I feeeeeel. . .?” All you hear is that extended sound of all the “e’s” as she says those dreaded “I feeeeel this” and “I feeeel that” phrases. It drives you crazy because you don’t want to hear the word “feel.”

Feeling, however, is what women are all about. Women feel and speak from their heart. They want to connect with you.

The reason so many guys fail when they approach women is because they’re talking either from their penis or from their head. They are like a walking penis, approaching women in a way that says to them “Hello. I’m holding my penis in my hands. Do you want to touch it?”

When men think with their dick (and sometimes only with their dick), women feel it. They know it.

One of the greatest exercises I tell men to do, is to just walk up to people all day long, and say to them from their heart “Hi. How are you today?” A lot of guys will refuse to do this exercise because they don’t think it’s fun, but it is a great way to learn how to communicate sincerely with people (including with women).

People really understand when you’re sincere. They know it. They can smell it if you’re not.

The insincerity tied to the use of pickup lines and routines exposes you right from the get-go. Women will know immediately that you are not sincere and aren’t speaking from your heart.

The other day, someone asked me when this whole concept came to fruition for me. I have actually been great with women most of my adult life, but once I started speaking from my heart my connections with women got deeper and more intense.

So, let’s say you see a woman who intrigues you and you want to approach her. She just ordered a great-looking sandwich.

You need to walk over to that woman with the curiosity of a little kid and say something like, “God that looks good! What is that?” She will feel your passion and your sincerity. She can smell it.

If, however, you walk over to her with your penis leading you and comment on the sandwich only because it’s a way to “open” her, then she is going to perceive you completely differently.

You may say something very similar like “Hello. Is that a good sandwich?” If you’re nervous because you are worried about how to deliver the line, though, the woman will smell it. She will know that you actually couldn’t care less whether or not she is enjoying that sandwich.

You’ve got to speak from your heart. Life is not about speaking from your head, and so many of us spend most of our time doing that. Life is about speaking from your heart.

Have you ever heard that sound in your head – rat atat tat tat tat rat atat tat tat tat tat? Do you have any idea what it’s like to be a Vienna sausage stuck in a jar with not enough liquid?

Well, yesterday I experienced all of that. I got the MRI.

I can’t begin to tell you how cheap they were. It’s not like I was hoping to experience a “happy ending” or anything, but for what I’m going to have to pay that my insurance doesn’t cover (and believe me, Michael Moore, I’m sure the insurance company is going to stick it to me on this one!), you’d think they’d at least invest in some Bose® noise-reducing headphones.

The MRI machine looks like one of those Japanese hotels. You know, those beds you rest on in Japan that look like you’re sleeping in a drawer.

It was pretty good at first. They put out a sheet and a pillow. I was actually starting to feel good, until they hand you a cheap pair of earphones.

They tell you that you may hear a few sounds. You MAY hear a few sounds? Sure, only if you’re almost deaf. It sounds like an airplane engine trying to start. So, really, some noise-reducing headphones would have been much better than the experience I had.

I also have to say that waiting for test results is the ultimate mind-fuck. So many of you stress out about if he (or she) is going to call you back. They don’t call you back, oh well! Whatever they do say to you on the phone, they are not going to tell you that you have a blown disc in your back.

So why are you stressing about whether someone calls you back? If they call, it is definitely good news. If they don’t call, then you have your answer.

With an MRI and test results, all you know when the phone rings is that the caller ID is letting you know it’s your doctor’s office on the phone. There’s really two very different ways that phone call can go.

So as I’m laying here waiting for test results, I can’t help but think that we all need to stop sweating the “is she (or he) going to call me back” thing. I get emails about this from people all the time “David, is she going to call me back?”

People even play mind games on themselves about this calling back issue. They will start to sweat about WHAT the person will say if they do call back. Let me tell you one thing: In dating, if someone calls you it’s generally a GOOD thing!

When a doctor calls you, it can be either good or bad. You could hear you have a blown disc, or you could hear everything’s pretty much good and that you just have a minor structural problem.

Isn’t it funny that no matter what we do, our mind will take us places we never want to go? I always tell people that my mind is like New York City.

One minute it’s there in Soho enjoying a beautiful art gallery and sitting outside in a nice cafe. The next moment it’s in the projects in a dark alley, and you’re the only one without a gun.

If you think about it, all of our minds are like a city. They have some good neighborhoods, and some really bad neighborhoods. The question is, how do you keep your mind out of the bad neighborhoods and only live on the upper East Side?

Because, of course, as The Jeffersons always said, “We’re movin’ on up to the East Side, to a deluxe apartment in the sky. Oh, we’re movin’ on up to the East Side. We finally got a piece of the pie….Now we’re up in the big leagues getting our turn at bat.”

By the way, on one final note, I made a decision while I was in the MRI machine. I decided that I want an open casket when I die. I mean, I got to be in one of the open MRI machines which was pretty nice. So when I die, I don’t want my soul to feel claustrophobic. My soul needs to be free!

Let’s continue Ass Week, because really let’s be honest. Most men will always want to check out a woman’s ass. It reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer mistakenly gets a Proctologist’s vanity plates which say “Assman” on them.

I thought I’d go a little deeper, though, for today’s Ass Week blog. So for most of the men out there who want to be able to get some ass, you especially will want to pay attention to this story I’m going to tell.

Today I’d like to talk about The Slow Stalker. This guy is my favorite. My girlfriend and I actually just ran into him.

We were at a farmer’s market the other day walking arm in arm, and as we passed this guy he stopped and stared bug-eyed at my girlfriend like he’d never before seen a woman breathing. He must have looked at her at least five or six times, and each time he looked at her he just got creepier and creepier. I swear I saw drool coming out of his mouth.

Then he did what all creepy men do. He got on his phone and became Poser Man. You know this guy. He’s in front of you – not ten feet away – and he gets on his phone and does ‘the pose.”

He does his best George Clooney impression, he looks down, puts his leg out and then rolls up his sleeve while flexing his bicep. Once he’s done all this, he then becomes the third person in this group: Model Man.

After Model Man shows you a few different poses featuring different angles of his face and bicep, he’ll then do “the catwalk” and pace five steps back and forth (and back and forth). You can almost hear a gay choreographer or Richard Simmons chanting “Uh 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5…”

This leads us to the fourth guy: Hair Flip Man. When he’s finished being persons one through three, Model Man turns into Hair Flip Man. He gets off his phone, takes three steps and then flips his hair back as he saunters off into the distance.

This leads to what this guy really is all together: Feminine Man. Because really, all of these techniques are so ridiculously feminine.

Did he learn them from watching America’s Next Top Model? Is he a friend of the choreographer from American Idol?

The funny this about this particular “ass man” is that he perfected all five Feminine Man techniques. It’s really a shame that I didn’t have my video camera with me so you could see this specimen on display!

Remember all these terrifying moments as a child? You just couldn’t look inside that closet no matter what because you were truly afraid that the Bogeyman was hiding inside of it.

Do you know who the Bogeyman really is? Go to the mirror right now. Look in the mirror. Go ahead and take a good look in the mirror. YOU are the Bogeyman!

That’s right. You are the Bogeyman, because every fear that you have ever had in your entire life has been manifested in your own mind. Every fear. Every single one of them.

What is the Bogeyman in your head? Even more important, what is the biggest, scariest Bogeyman in your head?

You may have a fear of approaching the opposite sex. If you do, that is your Bogeyman.

You may have a fear of intimacy when you get close to somebody. If you do, then that is your Bogeyman.

You may have a fear of asking somebody out or calling them back. If you do, then that is your Bogeyman.

All of us need to learn how to eliminate the Bogeyman, because the Bogeyman is actually the scared little boy or girl that you really are.

Let me ask you something: how do you feel about all of the headlines these days? Are you using this as your newest excuse for not going out to meet people? Or not to purchase things that you really desire that will improve your life?

Do you know what I’ve discovered? This is something that I really believe: the economy is not really as bad as we say it is – the economy is only as bad as we think it is because most of you are buying into the hype.

It’s that poverty mentality. It’s all of you saying to yourselves, “Well, I may still have a job but the economy is bad right now, and I’m not going to do the things I want to do. I’m going to wait for the economy to get better. I’m going to wait for President Obama to tell me that the economy is better.”

In reality, you have to start taking charge of your own economy. You are your own government.

Do you still have a job? Are you safe at your job? Does your job still pay you what it did last year? Are you managing your bills like you always have? Are you paying things on time? Are you buying things you can afford?

The economy keeps getting worse because the people who find themselves in a good financial situation (which is 90% of us!) stop spending money and push the economy into a further funk.

And this becomes your new excuse. It’s unbelievable. As humans, we are always looking for excuses not to progress. We come from a fear-based society.

So let me ask all of you a question today. How is the economic downturn REALLY affecting you? And be honest – are you really just using it as an excuse?

Life is all about mindset. What you believe is what you are going to attract. And if you have a poverty mindset, you’re going to be the next one fired during these poor economic times. If you truly believe that the world is coming to an end, it will.

I don’t believe that the world is coming to an end. My business is fine. I love my clients. Money comes in, people buy products and come to bootcamps, and I give it my all.

But it really amazes me how many people have that poverty consciousness – they’re watching every last dime thinking that it will actually be their last dime.

You attract exactly what you are. You have to understand that life is about abundance. If you live an abundant lifestyle, you’ll have an abundant lifestyle. I’m not talking about going out there and spending more money than you make – I think that’s ridiculous.

But the “doom and gloom” people – which a lot of you are – tend to really think that life is going to come to an end.

Do you remember Y2K? How many of you thought that the world was going to come to an end when the clock struck midnight, bringing in the year 2000? How many of you actually believed that everything would go haywire? That you wouldn’t be able to get your money out of the bank? That things wouldn’t work anymore?

I knew a person during that time that actually quit his job, moved to the mountains of Arizona and traded all of his money for gold because he was afraid of leaving his money in the bank. This is the same thing all over again. People buy into the “doom and gloom” because they live in a world full of fear and excuses.

What would you rather live in: a world of abundance and positive energy or a world based on fear?

And many of you are just settling for relationships that you’re not really all that excited about.

So the first thing that I really want to discuss with you all is communication. Communication is the key to everything in a relationship – including intimacy.

Why? Because without communication, you’ll never really be able to connect – to really share your desires and wishes with your partner.

Intimacy is about more than just having great sex. Intimacy is being able to look deeply into your lover’s eyes and have an amazing conversation. Intimacy is also based on honesty.

If you have great communication in a relationship, you’ll have honesty as well. The two qualities just work hand-in-hand.

If you feel comfortable to talk to your lover about anything in the world, you’re being honest with yourself and with your partner.

Many of you are not the best communicators, and that’s something we need to work on. So over the next couple of months, we will really focus in on teaching you guys to be master communicators – both in the blogs as well as some of the products.

A new product will be coming out soon called the Master Communicator Series, where we will really work to practice these skills.

It is so important to be able to communicate – anything, to anybody! Recently Rey had an experience that I’m sure many of you will find familiar.

Rey was frustrated with some things at work that weren’t going well for him, and he took some things personally (which we ALL do). But instead of communicating it to me immediately, it escalated into something that it never should have.

Instant communication is important. When you’re frustrated and upset with someone, you need to realize that you must process it. The quicker that you process it, the better the communication will be.

If you keep things festering inside, when you finally do talk to the person a week later, what will happen? You’re going to have an emotional outburst – that will lead to confrontation – that will lead to bad feelings between you and the person that you love.

I was recently on the phone with a good friend of mine who just broke up with a girl he had been seeing for three or four months. When I asked him what happened, he said “It just didn’t have that ‘it factor.’”

Have you guys ever dated someone who is so perfect that everyone who meets them thinks they are the most amazing person in the world? They are warm. They are attractive. They are as nice as can be. They remember your birthday in the most special ways. They call at all the right times. They are totally charming. The sex is even really good.

I mean, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this person. Nothing! They are everything you think you want . . . except you just don’t feel the “it factor.” The “it factor” is that feeling in your heart that you get when you know you are with the right person.

A lot of us will meet these “perfect” people and, because they are such a great person, we will give them an opportunity for a period of time to see if it can work. Some of us will actually give these people an opportunity for a long period of time.

My friend only gave her four months, but I know people (myself included) who have given someone years because you believe they believe you would be a fool to let such a perfect person go. You think to yourself “Is there something wrong with me? I mean, I am staring at perfection and I must be crazy that I can’t seem to feel what I want to feel with this person!”

It is called chemistry. I call it the “it factor.” No matter what you call it, we are all looking for it.

You don’t need to compromise in life. If you don’t have the “it factor” with the person you’re with then you need to ask yourself this question: Why are we wasting each other’s time?

There is no reason NOT to have the “it factor” in your relationship, because it does exist. I have it right now, and it is the most amazing feeling I have ever had.

The “it factor” for me with the person I’m dating means so much more than just being in love with her. I respect her. I honor her. I am more attracted to her than I have ever been to anybody else. She is my best friend and she is everything I always wanted.

I have the “it factor.” Each of you deserve to have the “it factor,” and none of you need to compromise.

Frustration!

What makes any of us want to figure something out? We want to improve our lives, of course, and ourselves, but for me it also came down to pure frustration.

I wasn’t bad with girls when I was younger – but I wasn’t great either. There were guys who were much better than me with women, and there were guys who were much worse.

It was in my twenties that I began to realize that I wanted the power to date whomever I wanted. I was kind of sick of just getting whatever came my direction. And don’t get me wrong – what came my direction certainly wasn’t bad – I just really wanted to have the choice.

In order to really do anything successfully in life, you need choice. You can’t spend your entire life taking exactly what comes to you.

I decided in my twenties that I was really going to use that time period to grow and figure things out for myself.

The crazy thing about your twenties – as I’m sure many of you reading this know – is that it’s really your most emotional time period as well. You feel like you should have it all figured out by now – that’s the biggest fallacy of your twenties. You feel bad because you don’t have all of your shit together, but in reality, no one does!

Your twenties is the most emotional time that you have – and you don’t know shit! Everything is still really new to you, and you don’t yet have the mindset to realize that you can totally fuck up and you’ll be okay.

So my twenties was just a series of those fuck ups. Using trial and error, I really learned what worked and what didn’t work for me. I always joke about this, but I wish I would have known myself now when I was in my twenties, because then I would have saved myself like five years of fumbling around!

In my twenties, my goal was to become better with women, and I was going to do that at whatever cost – and I still had fuck ups! But I really just wanted to have that choice, the ability to go date whomever I wanted, and I wanted to enjoy myself.

Back then (and still) I didn’t want to have any regrets about my life. I tell everyone this – the day you get married is the day you had better have gotten everything out of your system! If you didn’t, you’re going to have regrets. And with regrets, you’re going to have to go out and do it again. And again, and again.

If you think about it, pretty much everyone’s goal in life is to find somebody to love. That’s what we really all want. We all want to be loved, and we want to love someone.

We may not want it right now in this moment, but eventually we all want that end result of a great relationship.

You have to take that time in your twenties to really get to know yourself. I spent a lot of time in my twenties journaling, writing things down and figuring things out. I spent a lot of that time period just trying to figure out life. And in my twenties, it was really important for me to do that work.
