From Neil:
Just had dinner with a major book publisher, who told me that December 18th is just about the worst date ever to release a book.
Why? Because of something called compliance.
This is one of the biggest difficulties for book companies: no matter how hard they may try to release or promote a book, ultimately, when it’s unpacked and whether it’s displayed where it’s supposed to be is in the hands of individual bookstore employees. And some employees care more about books and their jobs an others.
Things get even worse around the holidays: when bookstore employees are dealing with the Christmas rush, the last thing they want to do is spend more time unpacking more books.
So, before you go out to get the book on December 18, make sure you call your local Barnes and Noble, Borders, Books-A-Million, or independent bookstore, and make sure they have Rules Of The Game out and available for purchase. That would rock.
My mom will even bake you cookies. That is, unless she reads the book, in which case she’ll be at the stores re-packing the boxes herself. And then burning them.
Also, if you’re in or around Los Angeles, the signing information for this weekend again is:
Saturday, December 15 at 5 p.m.
Book Soup/Pi Restaurant
8828 Sunset Blvd.
West Hollywood, CA 90069.
