The reason for the cultural taboo in our society around self-help is that not that it's anything for the guy ashamed of. The problem is that our economy is based on the average American sitting around watching several hours of TV a day, which drives corporate marketing, consumerism, and a lot other stuff. Empty consumerism in this country helps prop up sales of alcohol, anti-depressants, and other multi-billion dollar businesses. Our economy can only tolerate a certain amount of self-actualization, which is why you have been brainwashed by society into thinking it's a shameful thing.
