It's all about being honest and staying congruent with whatever natural personality you have. I suppose the only right way is acting sincerely and the only wrong way is being deceitful (to yourself and others). I have found that deliberately engaging other members of the group before turning your focus to the girl only works if you have a genuine desire to really talk to these people and learn more about them right away. If you have no such desire, you're better off being honest with yourself and everyone else by going directly to the girl. For my whole life, I've always been a pretty blunt and direct person. Chatting up whoever was with a girl I wanted to talk to never worked for me. They detected my manipulation and put up insurmountable resistance. After I started being direct and unapologetic about what I wanted, with no lies or excuses, I began to see RESULTS. As a side note, I have friends who socialize with surrounding groups and achieve great success. It works for them because they have a genuine desire to connect with others in a group at that immediate moment.
